Our Friend Monica Clarke

The Friends were saddened to learn recently of the death of Monica Clarke. Monica was a founder member of the Friends of CP Park, and someone to whom the protection of the park was of great importance. She had lived for many years in a house that backed onto Crystal Palace Park, and the garden there gave testimony to her green fingers.

Monica had many other commitments, in addition to her enthusiastic participation in the volunteering sessions with the Friends in the Secret Garden; she was a woman of wide interests and strong character, and we shall miss her.

Very exciting news about the Dinosuars

The dinosaurs and sculpted sphinxes of Crystal Palace are to be repaired, according to a heritage report out today.
Historic England's Heritage at Risk register gives an insight into historic sites which are most at risk from decay and dilapidation. The Grade I listed Crystal Palace sculptures have been included in the register, and are due to be repaired as part of a bigger plan to improve the Grade II* registered landscape.

October Volunteering Session

We had a great volunteering session today. We trimmed back the hedgerow we started working on last year which was hard work but very rewarding.

Before the volunteering session we had a committee meeting in which we met our new Community Officer from The Landscape Group - Welcome Penny

Welcome to our new friends

A lovely local has boosted ecology in the park by bring back bees.

Don't be fooled by the photo. They are very friendly as long as you don't go too near them!

Welcome to our fuzzy flying friends

Our March Volunteering Session

For our March volunteering session, which will be held, as usual on the second Sunday of the month, we will be clearing the fountain basin. As you can see from the pictures below it could use some TLC.

We will meet at the basin at 2pm. The easiest gate to use to get there is the Cintra Gate, walk along the path and you cannot miss the basin on your left hand side which is about 50 metres from the gate entrance.

We will be clearing some of the vegetation and rubbish getting it ready for the birds who will use it in the Spring.

If you want more details or have any questions please e-mail friendsofcpp@gmail.com

Hope to see you there this Sunday!

February Volunteering Session

We met up on a cold but sunny Sunday last week to put a few more hours work in to the Secret Garden, which we have been working on for a couple of years now.

Our 'boss' Sue had us clearing the wetland area around the pond,

and tidying up the hedges and trees which separate the wildflower meadow and what will be the country garden area.

Afterwards a few hours work there was just time for a cup of tea, a homemade flapjack and a chat about our 'Awards for All' application'!

Photos and more details on our 'Awards for All' application' coming soon...

re Keeping the Information Centre Open

The Friends would like to ensure that the Information Centre is open to the public in the Spring. Can you help with this?

We need volunteers to offer a couple of hours on either a Saturday or a Sunday, maintaining a presence in the Information Centre so that visitors to the park can obtain information about the park.

Extensive knowledge is not required as there is a comprehensive handbook available in the centre, and there will be some orientation sessions for volunteers, but we do need people who can make a regular commitment. If you would like to be involved, please contact Sue Wardman on smw1947@gmail.com,or on 020 8659 5308 as we would like to be up and running from Easter.
